Tuning a G5RV Jr. for 60m operation with a Yaesu FT-991. The FT-991 comes with the five SSB and five CW frequencies (channels) preprogrammed into 10 of the memories. The internal tuner might not be able to provide a match, depending on the antenna. This radio is at a friend’s mountain cabin. It is connected to a G5RV Junior via an LDG YT-1200 Autotuner.
Since the 60 meter channels are preprogrammed into the radio there is no way, other than performing the MARS modification, to force the radio to AM mode, for tuning. So I used CW channel 3 of the 60m band and transmitted with the “dah” paddle until the tuner was happy. Normally the tuner will switch the radio to AM a few seconds after you hold the tune button until the LED turns off. After the LED turns off, wait a few seconds until it turns on again. On 60 meters, the radio will not switch to AM. But, just hold down the “dah” paddle of your keyer until the LED turns off. You should also notice the SWR dropping as the tuner works. And, as usual, anything 2:1 or less is acceptable.
