Theodor Adorno coined the phrase "The Culture Industry" in a book he co-wrote called Dialectic of Enlightenment. In one of the chapters he explains why we buy items we don't need. He claimed mass society is being manipulated by goods related to popular culture such as films, magazines and since he died, social media. This mass media he called the culture industry and corporations use it to sell us products we don't need (eg. wine) by connecting them with our true needs (eg. connection, calm & community).
