Augustinas omits much of the text from this Lithuanian folk song. The complete text is included below.
On the other bank of the river a green meadow grew.
Several virgins were raking grass, and they sang while they worked.
“Do not sing, my virgins, those doleful songs.
Do not sadden my heart,” said a young soldier.
“I wasn’t lucky on the battle field:
The very first bullet speared my heart at once.”
There lay a dead soldier, shot in the battle.
There stood his black riding horse with his bridle still on.
“Come, black riding horse, I shall tell you something.
I will write a letter on your bridle.”
“I will write a letter with the golden letters,
and I will stamp it with my bloody sword.”
“My dear riding horse, please bring this letter
to my parents’ farmstead and stop just near the green gate there.”
“My young sister will feed you with her green rue wreath leaves,
and my mother will water you with her sorrowful tear drops.”
“There will not be enough leaves from my young sister’s rue wreath,
but there will be enough sorrowful tears from my old mother’s face.”
