commentary: three of the five passengers in the helicopter died in the crash, including the public works and environment minister of the former portuguese colony of sao tome and principe. officials at oporto's santo antonio hospital said the other two passengers had multiple injuries.
the helicopter crashed in flames in a wood near the northern city of oporto, and the two passengers who survived had a miraculous escape. two firemen fighting the flames that engulfed the helicopter after it hit the ground suffered burns and suffocation from smoke inhalation. the helicopter is believed to have struck a high-tension electric cable in thick mist. brigadier antonio pires veloso was reported on wednesday (9 june) to be fully conscious, but it would take three days to ensure that he was completely out of danger.
