“Lord, let your servant go in peace.”
This hymn is sung every night before bedtime during the Liturgy of the Hours in order to prepare oneself for the possibility of death. No one knows what tomorrow will bring. When we sleep, we have no control and we are totally at the mercy of the one who made us. God made and sanctified rest in order for us to realize that everything is in God’s hands, that we need not worry if we trust in God’s goodness.
Do we desire rest? Christmas is not about the busyness of consumerism or the food on our table, but about the idea that our God slept and rested in a manger. It is about going in peace, for God always fulfills God’s promises. It is about ultimately resting in God’s embrace and trusting that all will be well in the eternal morning we all desire and long for.
