In June 2009, Air France Flight 447, an Airbus A330, vanished over the Atlantic Ocean on a flight from Rio to Paris. Icy pitot tubes led to inconsistent airspeed readings, causing autopilot to disconnect. The pilots reacted incorrectly, entering an unrecoverable stall. Tragically, the plane crashed, claiming all 228 lives on board.
The Brazilian Navy quickly found wreckage, but it took nearly two years to locate the flight recorders. The 2012 BEA report concluded that poor airspeed data and pilot error were key factors in the accident, marking it as Air France’s deadliest.
