Obtaining an electricity connection in Sri Lanka typically involves submitting an application form to the relevant electricity distribution authority or utility company. The application form may vary slightly depending on the specific policies of the local authority, but here is a general guide on how to fill out an application for an electricity connection:
Step-by-Step Guide
1. Contact the Local Electricity Distribution Authority
- Identify the local electricity distribution authority or utility company responsible for providing electricity services in your area. You can usually find their contact information on their official website or by visiting their office.
2. Request the Application Form
- Obtain the official application form for a new electricity connection. You can do this by visiting the local office of the electricity distribution authority or by downloading the form from their official website.
3. Read the Instructions
- Before filling out the application form, carefully read any accompanying instructions or guidelines provided by the electricity distribution authority. This will help you understand the requirements and provide accurate information.
4. Fill in Personal Information
- Provide your personal information as required on the form. This may include your full name, contact details, and any other relevant information.
5. Provide Property Details
- Include details about the property where you are seeking the electricity connection. This may involve providing the property address, land details, and other specifics about the location.
6. Ownership or Tenancy Information
- Indicate whether you are the owner of the property or a tenant. If you are a tenant, you may need to provide additional documentation, such as a copy of the rental agreement.
7. Load Calculation (if applicable)
- If the application involves a commercial or industrial connection, you may need to provide information about the expected electrical load. This helps determine the appropriate capacity for the connection.
8. Attach Required Documents
- Check the application form for a list of required documents. Common documents include proof of ownership or tenancy, identification documents, and site plans. Attach copies of these documents to your application.
9. Review and Sign the Form
- Before submitting the form, review all the information you have provided to ensure its accuracy. Sign the application form where required.
10. Submit the Application
- Submit the completed application form along with the required documents to the local office of the electricity distribution authority. Some authorities may allow online submissions.
11. Follow up on the Status
- After submitting the application, inquire about the status of your request. The electricity distribution authority may conduct inspections and assessments before approving the connection.
OTHER THINGS TO NOTE
The relevant Area Engineer of CEB or his representative will carry out necessary tests and the service connection is provided only after the approval granted for the electrical installation. If the electrical installation is not done according to the required manner the CEB staff or the contractor may not provide the service connection. In such case, you should inform the CEB again after proper completion of the installation.
The applicant will have to bare the additional costs of revisits as per approved charges and rates. If there is any risk identified, the approval for service connection is not granted. Service connection is not provided if the building has been constructed using any inflammable material. Therefore, the service connection is not provided if the roof of the building is finished with Cadjan (coconut leaves) or similar material.
Please inform any problem related to providing the electricity service connection by CEB staff or the contractor to the Electrical Superintendent or to the Area Engineer as soon as possible. You can meet the Electrical Superintendent or the Area Engineer on Monday mornings and Wednesday mornings for any inquiry.
If you don’t receive the electricity bill within three months after obtaining the service connection, please inform to the Area Office in writing or be present with documents provided by CEB when providing the service connection.
If you apply for a three phase supply for an industry, the possibility of providing service connection is examined. You should purchase any equipment only after informing the possibility of providing the service connection.
