Hello Gardeners,
Gardening in Urban Cities is a tricky subject. Urban Gardeners need to consider small containers and lightweight growing mediums like coco pith keeping in mind space and weight.
For a plant to grow, be it veggies or flowers or even small fruit trees, lightweight growing media like coco pith will not add any nutritious value for the plant to successfully grow.
It is very important that we provide macronutrients such as Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium (NPK) to our soil mix. Committing ourselves to Organic Way of Terrace / Kitchen Gardening throws challenges such as addressing the nutrient insufficiency in the soil mix. To keep the inorganic chemical fertilizers at bay, terrace gardeners often resort to native farming techniques used by our forefathers.
Usage of Groundnut Cake Liquid Nutrient is one such powerful and simple fertilizing technique etched firmly in native farming manuals. This video explains the usage of this liquid nutrient and we hope that you all will find this informative and useful.
Preparation of Groundnut Cake Liquid Nutrient:
Take 250 gms of Groundnut Cake and 50 gms of Neemcake Powder and mix them in 10 liters of water. Store this mixture in an airtight container and leave this for fermentation for 5 to 7 days. Fermenting groundnut cake in water will develop worms and fungus and hence neem cake powder is also added to prevent the formation of fungus and worms. Neem cake powder is a proven organic pesticide and adding this to our soil mix through this liquid fertilizer is an added advantage. This container shall be stored in a cool, dry place, preferably in the terrace storeroom or any such arrangement. Shake the container twice daily for 5 to 7 days.
Application:
After 5 to 7 days of fermentation, take this mixture and dilute the solution in a 1:10 ratio with water. Add one liter of this liquid nutrient to 10 liters of water. Newbies are advisable to filter this mixture and dilute only the filtrate and avoid the slurry. However, we have always used this liquid nutrient without filtering and have not found any development of unwanted pests in our terrace garden pot/soil. Give this mixture to the soil in moderation as per the pot size as shown in the video.
This liquid nutrient is a high source of Nitrogen and adding this without proper dilution will cause certain plants to produce more foliage at the expense of flowers. Yellowing of green plants indicates nitrogen deficiency and this liquid nutrient addresses this issue, as it is abundant in Nitrogen. Phosphorus plays a key role in roots development, blooming, and fruiting. Potassium is important for roots and stem development. This liquid nutrient mixture is a good source of NPK and is a boon for urban gardeners.
