Ousted Malian president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita died on Sunday at his home in Bamako at the age of 76.
While the cause of his death has not been made public yet,... his passing was confirmed by a former close aide.
Keita had once come to power on the promise of honest leadership,... but was later ousted in a coup in 2020,... amid allegations of corruption.
Popularly known by his initials,... I.B.K,... he was the president from 2013 to 2020,... one of the most turbulent periods in Mali's recent history.
In August 2020,... armed soldiers arrested him,.. and forced him to resign on television,... before later releasing him.
Keita had sought medical treatment in the United Arab Emirates for years,... and was hospitalized shortly after being overthrown.
Reports of a new volcanic eruption near Tonga.
According to AFP the latest explosion was detected by the Australian Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre on Monday morning.
The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre also stated it had spotted large waves in the area.
This comes just three days after a powerful underwater volcano erupted close to the South Pacific island.
Saturday's footage from a satellite operated by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration showed a vast plume from the volcano rising high into the atmosphere,... as its shockwave extended outward,.. showing the sheer power of the event.
The eruption created a 4-foot tsunami that hit Tonga's capital,... while the sonic boom from the eruption was heard across the Pacific Ocean,... reaching as far away as Alaska.
Due to its close proximity,... military surveillance aircraft departed from New Zealand to the region on Monday to assess the status,... and provide aid and supplies for Tonga,.. where water supplies may be contaminated.
Officials from the International Olympic Committee on Saturday,.. wrapped up their first round of inspections for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games.
As part of their inspection,... competition venues,... as well as major non-competition venues in downtown Beijing,... Yanqing District,.. and Zhangjiakou in neighboring Hebei Province were under examination.
During the inspection,... officials praised the 80 newly-added seats in the Capital Indoor Stadium,... as well as the heating area,.. set up in the Shougang Big Air venue.
They added that remarkable progress had been made in the construction and integration of the stadiums and facilities,... noting they were not only built quickly,... but also to a high degree of quality.
However,... officials also brought forward some revision suggestions.
Once adjustments are made,... permanent and temporary facilities at the venues will be approved for use.
