(1 Jan 2014) Around two thousand people, dressed only in their swimwear, have taken to the cold waters of the Atlantic in a New Year's Day tradition dating back to 1903.
Swimmers braved the cold weather to take the Polar Bear plunge at Coney Island Beach in New York City.
Some people were shocked by how cold the water was.
"It's good just got to find my missing body parts. Happy New Year," said one man after taking a dip.
For others, it wasn't that bad.
"I actually think it's not that cold," said Rosalina Pong of New York, wearing just a bikini and a viking helmet.
Lifeguards stood among the throngs of swimmers on the beach front - in case of any emergencies.
