I got news that the Talgo 8 Trainset located in Milwaukee, WI, that is not used and is still brand new, was finally going to be moved to Chicago, IL, and then to Beech Grove, IN Amtrak Facility to be stored. Amtrak P42s #23 and #162 moved the lengthy train very late at night. I caught it at Canal St. crossing, just outside Chicago Union Station at 11:50pm on 5/28, 10 minutes before the next day.
Update! - I thought the 3 cabs also had prime movers in them for power. I found out they are only cabs, so for the 2 sets 2 of the 3 cabs is at one end of both sets, like a NPCU, and the 3rd is an extra. If these were to run, they would have locomotive at one end, same concept as the Hiawatha. Disregard my annotation about "Where's the 4th?!"
These 2 sets were made to be used on a Madison - Milwaukee line, after legal and law stuff occured, it didn't happen and was then to be used for the Hiawatha service to/from Chicago and Milwaukee. That didn't happen either, so they've been sitting, and finally got moved on 5/28/14.
Biking towards downtown, to the Pennsy signals, an inbound Metra passed. Thinking that I missed it, I started biking closer to downtown, to Union Station. While biking down Lake street, about 1 block parallel to the tracks, I saw the gates go down, and hauled butt over to Canal St. crossing, it was the Talgos! I just barely missed it since about 10 seconds before I started recording, I just got to the gates on my bike, and hopped off while recording on my bike, hence the shakiness.
Despite the Pennsy signals having less light to see the train, I think Canal St. was much better for lighting, except that E bell for the crossing was a bit too close and annoying, I think it turned out okay.
Thanks for watching!
