(1 Feb 2021) Myanmar's largest city, Yangon, was quiet on Monday morning following news of the overnight coup staged by the military.
Police have blocked access to the international airport but generally the presence of security forces was light.
The city, which along with many other places in the country polled heavily in favor of Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy in last November's election, appeared to be staying calm though an AP reporter reported queues at ATMs with people withdrawing money.
It was not immediately clear if this was related to the reported coup.
In the capital, Naypyitaw, a helicopter could be seen flying over an otherwise quiet street scene.
Myanmar military television said Monday that the military was taking control of the country for one year, while reports said many of the country's senior politicians including Suu Kyi had been detained.
