Have you ever noticed something strange about villains in animated movies? So many of them… are surrounded by green!
Take Maleficent, for example. Her flames Glow bright green. And Dr. Facilier from The Princess and the Frog, his shadow magic is filled with purple and green hues And don’t forget Ursula from The Little Mermaid, her potions bubble with a glowing green as she casts her spells!
In The Nightmare Before Christmas, Oogie Boogie’s lair glows green, and in the Lion King, Scar's 'Be prepared' scene is filled with an eerie green glow.
Even characters like Shrek and the Grinch also use green! They may not be villains, but they start out isolated and feared. Green makes them stand out, showing they don’t quite fit in.
But why green? Well, it’s not just random. Green has long been linked to envy, sickness, and even poison—qualities that make villains feel extra creepy.
It goes back to fairy tales and folklore, where green was often a symbol of danger and magic. Animators use it as a shortcut to show us something’s wrong.
