The number of refugee crossing into Bulgaria illegally has increased dramatically over the last year. According to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, more than five-thousand applications for asylum were registered as of October this year. That's nearly a 400% increase over the same period last year. Most asylum seekers are crossing from Turkey, prompting the Bulgarian government to construct a 33-kilometer fence along the border between the two countries.
