You've hit the range with your new AR-15 and, after proper safety checks, emptied a magazine downrange. The action locks open and it's time to do a magazine change. Keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, your trigger finger in the "home" position, and make sure the safety is ON. Press the mag release button, remove the empty mag, insert a full mag using the "push-pull" method, release the bolt, and resume firing position. Reload done! BUT what if you need to change mags before the action locks open, maybe in the midst of a runnin'-and-gunnin' competition? Jeff demos a reload with the action closed, and he explains the "push-pull" mag insertion technique. TIP: Don't "ride" the charging handle forward. Pull it all the way back, then LET GO so the buffer spring pressure closes the bolt. TYPE 1 Malfunction: Problem with a round in the chamber or NO round at all in the chamber, and you get only a "click" when you squeeze the trigger. Do an Immediate Action Drill: Finger in the home position, smack the base of the magazine to make sure it's seated, then tug down on it. Cycle the charging handle, then attempt to fire. TYPE 2 Malfunction: A spent shell doesn't fully eject and gets stuck in the ejection port, called a "stovepipe" malfunction. Use the same Immediate Action Drill used to fix a Type 1 malfunction. Common causes of malfunctions include a dirty gun, bad ammunition, operator error, and broken parts.
