Chancellor Angela Merkel has won a landslide victory in Germany's general election, after her party secured 41.5 per cent of the popular vote at the ballot box. Merkel's right-wing Christian Democratic Union now holds almost half the seats in the Bundestag -- 311 of 630, leaving them just short of an overall majority and in need of a coalition partner.
