This motet is written for 12 voices, 12 individual melodic lines. This is a numerological expression of the perfection of Mary. The voices are broken up into smaller groups, first three higher voices sang, then four middle voices, and then four lower voices sing. Finally, all 12 voices sing together. We hear the 12th voice for the first time at that point, singing a medieval song, “O Maria flos virginum” (Oh Mary, flower of virgins).
