Polit Affairs - June 20 2019, At midnight An American Advanced drone was shot down by Iranian defense missile over the strait of Hormuz in Persian Gulf, an incident that was nearly getting both countries to a military confrontation. But the question for Americans was simple: how and what system did this?
As you know I have made some videos about Military drones, and as feedback received critics and suggestions. some of my subscribers said that drones of some countries are more advanced or less fragile in front of defense systems and things like that.
I want to make it clear that the drone technology is not mature yet like for example fighter jets. so even best drones could become hunted, and this is not a sign of weakness for these UAVs.
this video coincides with a huge incident that happened 3 years ago in June 2019, when Iranian missile system, shot down an advanced United States RQ-4A Global Hawk surveillance drone with a surface-to-air missile over the Strait of Hormuz.
The report of this incident was like a bomb for every one, because no one though that these most advanced American drones could ever get shot, nonetheless by an Iranian indigenous air defense system.
US at first denied this report but then a video of the full incident with evidence of violation of Iranian air spaces and finally pieces of the American drone were shown on Iranian TV.
Donald Trump said that US won't react because it was an unmanned vehicle and there were no human casualty.
The U.S. has been flying surveillance drones in support of maritime security and to spy on Iran for many years. To abide by international law, such flights must take place in international airspace. Aside from the frequent legal reconnaissance flights, Iran has protested what it alleges are violations of its sovereign air space.
But this RQ-4A Global Hawk was different. it is believed to be the largest drone in the entire fleet of the U.S military, which is worth at least 100 million dollars.
It became an unprecedented incident and attracted attentions to the Iranian defense systems, which were under rated before. Th System which shot the RQ-4A Global Hawk is called Sevom Khordad (3-th Khordad). it is an Iranian road-mobile medium range air defense missile system that was first unveiled on 11 May 2014. It is believed to be an upgraded version of the Ra'ad air defense system. it has a range of 50–105 km and can operate at altitudes of 25–30 km.
This is not even the best defense systems they have developed in Iran, but yet was able to shoot down maybe the most valuable sophisticated drone of the US fleet.
So, All drones could be vulnerable and its not strange that a Turkish Bayraktar TB2 or and Iranian drone gets shot else where, the Important point is that, having an entire fleet of these little flying machines, could really become a game changer in any conflict. and this is what Iran and Turkey have.
