Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) fell into an inexplicable crash just 150m from the finish to dampen his devastating attack as the late 16th stage of life slammed into La Vuelta.
The Slovenian blew the peloton away as he sprinted within the last 3km as the race headed down a steep incline to Tomaris, taking a group of five riders straight home as he sought time to take on Remko Evenpoel. (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) and was scheduled to take a hunk as Evenepoel mechanically herded on the road - the Belgian spared only a significant loss of time with his 3km safety net - only to somehow attempt to crash it into a sprint after an apparent struggle of the handlebars. With Briton Fred Wright (Bahrain victorious), Mad Pedersen (Trek Segafredo) came out of the carnage to take victory ahead of Pascal Ackermann (UAE Team Emirates) and Danny van Poppel (Bora-Hansgrohe), with Wright placing another fourth.
But today it was all about Roglic and his last episode of Bad Luck. Despite all his pain, Roglic only took an eight-second win over Eveningpool - who crossed the streak over three minutes but earned the same time as the chasers.
