ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- A local rock mason is showing students how science and math apply to the everyday world around them.
Students get the idea of how science and teamwork can be used in art. These students will put those principals to practice while working with teaching artist Joe Dinwiddie in the school's garden.
"That really helps make the connection when they see the creative process and then learn that there are also other parts that go in with it," Joe said. "It's an interdisciplinary the math science fit well into the art."
"Science is a lot more fun when you're like doing hands on stuff instead of just learning about it in the textbook," fifth grader Irving said.
Joe will come back to Claxton in May. The students will make carvings on the boulders related to the cardinal directions, as well as other concepts related to astronomy.
His visit is funded through the Asheville City Schools Foundation.
