The celebration on Thursday in Jakarta of Indonesia's 72nd National Day fully demonstrated the country's diversity of colors and cultures, through various ceremonial march-pasts and traditional dances.
All the over 200 ethnic groups forming the Indonesian nation are represented in the celebration through various colors and styles of costumes donned by dancers, flag-bearers, guard of honor and even horses and chariots.
"We have hundreds of traditional costumes, from places including Kalimantan, Sumatra, Sulawesi, Papua and the Java Island. The diversity of colors and cultures make it Indonesia," said Indonesian President Joko Widodo who has joined his country people in Thursday's celebration.
Aug 17 is the day when Indonesia declared independence from the Dutch colonial rule in 1945.
On June 1 of that same year, Indonesian nationalist leader Sukarno articulated the country's philosophy of state, better known as the The Five Principles. These principles are Indonesian nationalism; internationalism or humanism; consent or democracy; social prosperity; and belief in one God.
