WE CELEBRATE the work and achievements of costume designer Bhanu Athaiya – India’s first Oscar winner in 1983 for her work in Sir Richard Attenborough’s monumental film, ‘Gandhi’.
Actor Meeta Vasisht shares her memories of working with Athaiya both in films and in the theatre.
Vashisht has been in the industry for more than 30 years and talks about her first encounter with Athaiya and what a profound impression it made on her.
She then describes how she first came to work closely with her on on the theatre production, ‘A Greater Dawn’ (1993), based on Indian thinker Sri Aurobindo’s epic poem, ‘Savitri’.
She goes onto talk about the time when she was cast as lead alongside Akshay Kumar in the 1996 Bollywood film, ‘Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi’ (‘Player of Players’) – though she didn’t make it into the eventual film.
Athaiya also worked with Vashist on Kumar Shahini’s experimental and influential film, ‘Kyal Gatha’ (‘Kyal’s Story’) in 1989. This is about the history of Khayal, a classical form of Indian vocals and the actors retell stories of the forms’ origins.
