Chickens are the most exploited land animal on Earth. More chickens are raised and killed for food than every other species combined.

In the UK, more than 1 billion chickens are killed for meat every single year. That's about 1/8 of the total world human population every single year, just in the UK.

At least 95% of them are factory farmed, crammed into huge industrial units by their tens of thousands. Some farms hold more than a million chickens at a time.

A chicken's natural lifespan is up to eight years. However, broiler chickens have been selectively bred to grow 400% faster than they naturally would so they are ready to be slaughtered at just six weeks old. They struggle with lameness, heart and respiratory problems as a result.

Free-range is no better. It is a common misconception that free-range chickens roam around vast green fields to their heart's content. Free-range is a marketing con and exists to ease the conscience of the consumer, not to improve the lives of animals. Most birds will never go outside due to strict pecking orders in the flock.

Whether factory farmed, free-range or slower growing, ALL chickens end up at the slaughterhouse. Most are gassed to death, gasping and flapping their wings in panic as they suffocate. The remaining chickens are shackled by their feet and stunned in an electrical water bath before having their throats cut. This is often ineffective and some birds may still be conscious when they bleed out.

All chickens deserve to live their lives free from harm. The best way to ensure this is to take them off your plate and choose vegan.
