In early 2021, it was announced that visionary auteur Darren Aronofsky would be directing a Blumhouse horror film entitled Adrift for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, adapting the screenplay alongside Luke Dawson from the short story of the same name by Ringu author Koji Suzuki, which concerns a deckhand (Jared Leto) whose fishing boat discovers an abandoned yacht with a strange distress call. He agrees to take lone control of it while it's towed into port, but soon, he makes the unfortunate discovery as to why it's called it a "ghost ship." Aronofsky and Leto — reteaming for the first time since Requiem for a Dream — would also produce the film alongside Carla Hacken, Ari Handel, and Emma Ludbrook, with Scott Franklin, Ryan Turek, and Christopher H. Warner serving as executive producers. No doubt many of Aronofsky's frequent collaborators would've also joined in, including score composer Clint Mansell, costume designer Danny Glicker, film editor Andrew Weisblum, production designer Mark Friedberg, and cinematographer Matthew Libatique. However, no further news would ever come of the project. Follow me and ponder the question, "What if...?"
