The Carrshields tailings dam is a scheduled monument on the bank of the River West Allen in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The stabilisation of the dam, which contains a substantial amount of historical mine waste from the nearby abandoned metal mines, is a joint project by the Coal Authority and Environment Agency, which will stop about 4 tonnes of lead, cadmium and zinc from polluting the river each year.
The work was jointly funded by Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the North East Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) fund, managed by Newcastle County Council.
It is part of the Water and Abandoned Metal Mines (WAMM) programme - you can read more about this important work here: [ Ссылка ]
