CUT IT DOWN. I made the call . . . but was it the right one? And how did the John Deere 1219 hay mower hold up?!
With months of little to no precipitation, the grass was only 8" tall . . . normally it stands proud at 24-36" tall. I had a choice . . .
1. cut it ON TIME and PRAY for plenty of rain for an early second cut
or
2. Wait a few more weeks to see IF it will grow more, and RISK lowering the overall quality of nutrition.
WHICH CALL did I make, and WHY I made it . . .
Cutting hay on a small family farm means tapping into the niche market . . . a market larger producers simply CANNOT manage . . . "low-sugar hay". We pick varieties and types that are generally low sugar and MAKE THEM EVEN LOWER in sugar by cutting at specific points. Combined with zero herbicides or pesticides and virtually weed free fields, our quality is bar-none and allows us charge more than the standard hay producers around us. Our customers know quality, and we have the hay nutrient tests to back up our product!
How will 1st cutting hay do? How BAD are the fields? Will we even get a SECOND CROP? Be sure you are subscribed and stay-tuned!
