(28 Jun 2016) Volkswagen is going to pay up to $15.3 billion to settle consumer lawsuits and government allegations that it cheated on emissions tests.
Up to $10 billion will go to 475,000 owners of Volkswagens or diesel Audis who thought they were buying high-performance, environmentally-friendly cars. They later found that the emissions from those cars were vastly higher than allowed under U.S. pollution laws.
Elizabeth Cabraser, lead attorney in the case against Volkswagen says that the settlements send a very "strong, loud and clear message" to the automaker.
Cabraser says the variety of settlements amounting to a $15.3 billion figure, is money going 'primarily to class members but also to the environment.'
Volkswagen agreed to either buy back or repair the vehicles, although it hasn't yet developed a fix for the problem.
