Before A Physical Inventory Count
- Plan the store count for the day of the week when inventory levels are at their lowest
- Hire an outside company to do an initial item inventory count
- Discuss the inventory process in advance with the counters, such as the ways to count and what to count first and last
- Prepare index cards as count cards to place in areas counted
- Have a diagram of the store layout so areas are counted the same way each time
- Build your displays and keep like products together, such as 12 packs of soda or diet soda, in separate rows and not mixed throughout
- Place UPC’s in the counter’s line of sight in your backroom
- Keep dump bins separated using cardboard inserts to keep like products in one area for easier counting
- Train cashiers to ring items by individual UPC
- Train cashiers to do returns on the register correctly by refunding the item and ringing in the new item
- Keep high theft items in cashier’s line of sight

- Close the shift right before count is conducted
- Open a new shift
- Count sections one at a time and place the count card in that area after it is counted—index cards work well as an alternative
- Sync handheld after each section is counted
- Do not move inventory or restock shelves during the count
- Close the shift when inventory count is complete
