The founder of outdoor clothing company North Face has died after his kayak capsized in freezing waters in Chile.
Douglas Tompkins was on General Carrera Lake, in Patagonia, when his boat was hit by a strong wave.
He was rushed to hospital in Coyhaique (around 1,140 miles south of Santiago) but was pronounced dead of severe hypothermia hours later.
Tompkins founded The North Face in the 1960s as a small ski and backpacking retailer in San Francisco.
The 72-year-old also co-founded clothing company Esprit with his now ex-wife.
He later became an active environmentalist and bought vast tracts of land in the Patagonia region of Chile and Argentina in the 1990s.
He converted these into protected nature parks.
