A few day ago I had the great pleasure to record a fully stock and well preserved Lancia Delta HF Integrale Evoluzione II.
Living in Italy, I must admit I'm quite used to see many of these Rally icons at local meetings, events or track days but I've never had the chance to analyze and have a better look at one of them in their entirety. Plus it's pretty common to find tuned or modified Deltas here, so having a good chance to record a stock one, my curiosity increased a lot.
While all the previous versions were built in order to suit the rally Group A homologation requirements, the Evo 2 was a car purely built for enthusiasts and public sale from 1993 to 1995, after Lancia had officially withdrawn from the World Rally Championship since 1991 (but still racing under the Jolly Rally Team in 1992). But precisely before the end of 1992, with the closure of the Chivasso plant, production of the Lancia Delta HF Integrale Evoluzione ended, with the famous "Martini 5" and "Martini 6" special editions.
So how was born the Evoluzione 2? Thanks to Maggiora, an Italian coachbuilder from Moncalieri near Turin, who had taken over the Chivasso plants and produced the final Delta version on behalf of Lancia. This is why pure enthusiasts don't consider the Evoluzione II a "real Lancia", but still the best street-legal Delta of all time.
Compared to the "Evo 1", some changes were made to the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder 16v turbo engine, increasing the max power to 215 hp at 5,750 rpm and a max torque of 314 Nm at 2,500 rpm. A three-way catalyst and lambda sensor were added in order to comply with Euro 1 anti-pollution legislation. Power isn't what makes you fall in love with this machine, but traction, lateral grip and dynamic qualities. You can really feel how perfectly balanced is the car even from the passenger seat, thanks to the amazing original Recaro seats too.
In this video you can appreciate some details and angles of the car, followed by a couple of accelerations and on board footage. To better record the sounds, I placed a little microphone both near the exhaust and one inside the engine bay (I realized later I should have put it near the intake and not on the opposite site, my bad..).
