Vladimir Kara-Murza, a Russian politician, author, historian, and former political prisoner of the Putin regime, discusses his fight for human rights in Russia and how to prepare for Russia's eventual democratization.

Professor Michael McFaul, director of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, moderated the discussion. Opening remarks were provided by Kathryn Stoner, the Mosbacher Director of the Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law.

The Wesson Lectureship was established at Stanford by the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies in 1989. It provides support for a public address at the university by a prominent scholar or practicing professional in the field of international relations. The series is made possible by a gift from the late Robert G. Wesson, a scholar of international affairs, prolific author, and senior research fellow at the Hoover Institution.
