The BMW Motorrad Concept R18 represents the essence of motorcycling, a motorcycle in its most primitive and natural form. In true custom style it celebrates the art of neglecting what is superfluous and focusing on what is essential. "The biggest challenge in design is to make everything visible. Every part has a functional purpose. Not many people have the courage to adopt such an honest approach," says Bart Janssen Groesbeek, designer of the concept bike. The BMW Motorrad Concept R18 is immediately recognizable as an authentic BMW: boxer engine, cradle frame, prominent drive shaft, black-painted drop-shaped tank and hand-applied contrast lines interpret the traditional BMW Motorrad design symbols while showing, in a modern style, linearity and purity.

The heart of the BMW Motorrad Concept R18 is the large 1800 cc twin-cylinder boxer engine, with a renewed design. Its exterior appearance consciously resembles the twin-cylinder engines that BMW Motorrad built until the late 1960s but with a significantly larger displacement and a modern air / oil cooling system. The boxer prototype was designed down to the smallest detail: the engine block and transmission are made of aluminum with glass microspheres, which are the ideal stage on which to present the hand-polished aluminum components, as well as the belt protection and valve covers. The engine badge bears the name of the concept bike and underlines its high quality.

Another visual strength is the exposed chrome drive shaft that connects the rear wheel. There are no further covers in any part of the motorcycle, which serves to keep all components clearly visible. Similarly, the electronics of the concept bike is reduced to nothing more than ignition and lights highlighting the simplicity of its line.

The BMW Motorrad Concept R18 is the third interpretation of the large-capacity German boxer engine from BMW Motorrad. Last December the model created by the Japanese customisers "CUSTOM WORKS ZON" was presented at the Yokohama Hot Rod Show, based on the new engine prototype. The "Departed" won the biggest award of the event, the "Best of Show Motorcycle" award, and thrilled motorcycle enthusiasts with its classic forms, modern production techniques and artisan details. The interpretation of the Revival Cycles was then revealed.
