Thin Emulsion Asphalt Mixtures (Micro Surfacing)
Micro surfacing has been used in the United States of America since 1980 to improve the asphalt pavement of roads and increasing the lifespan of pavements.
Micro surfacing is a mixture of modified bitumen emulsion and polymer, 100% crushed rock materials, mineral filler, water, and if necessary, admixture. In other words, this mixture is a type of slurry seal that is produced with modified polymer bitumen and higher quality materials. Unlike slurry seal that is only applied with a thickness amounting to 1.5 times that of biggest rock material grading, micro surfacing can be applied in relatively large thicknesses. The effectiveness of micro surfacing depends on many factors, including weather conditions, traffic, the preexisting pavement condition, material quality, mix design, and application. The most common application of these mixtures is to create a rough surface texture and fill roller wheel grooves in asphalt pavement. Other applications of micro surfacing emulsion include:
• Repairing bitumen deformation and graveling
• Layer leveling
