Over time, tiles not only have increased in size but have also become less porous, thus requiring even stronger adhesion for proper installation. Combing the mortar in STRAIGHT lines as opposed to swirling or circular pattern allows better air release and maximum mortar coverage.
For large format tiles, apply adhesive mortar using a notched trowel onto the substrate and using the flat side, apply the same onto back of the tile. Backbuttering is recommended for large format, glass, natural stones or outdoor tile installations. Spot bonding or Blob method is a no-no. Keep in mind that larger tiles require a larger deeper notched trowel.
