The "W Trek" in Patagonia is considered one of the most famous hikes in the world, renowned for its stunning landscapes that include granite towers, glaciers, and lakes, with the trail itself forming a "W" shape on the map.
First Day Morning (Sector Central to Base Torres) - 13 Miles
================================================
You’ll begin your hike from the Central Sector. Once you pass Hotel Las Torres, you’ll soon cross a footbridge over the river. After climbing uphill for a bit, you’ll get your first view of “Windy Pass”. As you hike through the valley, you’ll continue to gradually gain elevation until, after about 3 miles, you’ll arrive at “Refugio Chileno”, a camping area with a basic restaurant. From here, the Mirador Base Torres is just 3 miles from Refugio Chileno.
First Day Afternoon (Sector Central to Los Cuernos) - 8 Miles
=================================================
This section is mostly flat, with the exception of some slight uphill and downhills, with a constant amazing view on Nordenskjold Lake. The distance between Los Cuernos and Camp Central/Las Torres is 11km and it should take you between 4 and 5 hours. On the whole trail you can see beautiful mountains on one side and Nordenskjold Lake on the other. In the summer, you can see green trees and plants everywhere around you.
Second Day (Los Cuernos - Brittanica - Paine Grande) - 16 Miles
===================================================
The 2nd day is easily my favorite day of the hike. I had to deal with extremely strong gusts for the next few hours. Italiano is a very basic campsite with the bare minimum of amenities. From here on, the path gets steeper and more difficult. Over the remaining 1.9 km, you will gain another 160 m in elevation. The terrain becomes rocky and uneven, making it harder to negotiate.
The views are absolutely striking. As you get deeper into French Valley, you will witness all sorts of stunning landscapes. There are waterfalls, there are glaciers and mountains, but above all, there are incredible panoramas of both Cuernos and the hills and lakes of Torres del Paine to the south. This is not a view to glance over and rush back. Have a seat and allow yourself to enjoy and admire it.
Third Day (Paine Grande to Grey Refugio to Suspension Bridge) - 10 Miles
===========================================================
Torres del Paine is known for its impressive glaciers and beautiful lakes, and one of the best ways to experience both is by hiking to Grey Glacier at the end of Lago Grey. The Grey Glacier hike ascends through a valley then roughly follows along the shoreline of Lago Grey before eventually arriving at a viewpoint near the base of Grey Glacier. At the bottom of the hill, you can see Rio Olguin and then the trail made some more ups and downs before finally arriving at Refugio Grey. Hike to lookout point and then to two suspension bridges.
Fourth and Last Day (Grey Refugio to Paine Grande) - 7 Miles
=================================================
Last day in Torres Del Paine. Gathered my things and headed back down the valley to Paine Grande campsite at around 9AM. The way down should take about 3-4 hours. The catamaran leaves at 6:40pm and will take about half an hour to get you back to Pudeto - from here you’ll be back on your bus to Puerto Natales.
