Despite their name Tahitian pearls do not come from Tahiti. They come from the French Polynesian islands surrounding Tahiti, and they are therefore often sold and traded in Tahiti. Tahitian pearls are large pearls found in a variety of colors including black, grey, silver, brown, and peacock green colors. To be classified as a South Sea pearl, the pearl must come from the pinctada margaritifera oyster which is a large black lipped oyster
