Episode 2 of "Top 3 (boardgame) Things (of the week)"! Three things that I am excited about in the boardgame world this week -- whether an upcoming game, a game I just received or played, a piece of news, or whatever is bringing me boardgame joy right now.
In Episode 2, the theme seems to be unusual board game themes --
(1) Chants for the Old Ones -- Unusual theme flipping the Cthulhu board game vibe on it's head! Worker placement, deck-builder where you are competing cults trying to raise your favorite Lovecraftian Old One first while fending off (or taking out) investigators that stand in your way.
(2) Unconscious Mind -- Another fun, different them -- the Freudian world of psychoanalytical interpretation of dreams to help clients work through their issues. Worker placement, tableau and engine building with beautiful art in which you can create increasingly powerful combos if you play your cards right (or dreams, rather, in this case!).
(3) Halloween II -- Set in the universe of the movies, Michael Meyers is played by one player against the others who play "victims," including our star Laurie, along with hospital staff and authorities. In this sequel, Michael has chased Laurie to the hospital, and she must find her way to safety within a certain period of time before Michael exacts his revenge. A lighter, but fast-playing romp with what sounds like jump scares in a board game??? Shoutout to the Secret Cabal podcast for bringing this to my attention!
