A new composition by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was recently discovered, having remained hidden for 233 years. The piece, titled Ganz kleine Nachtmusik (or "Quite Little Night Music"), was found at the Leipzig Municipal Library in Germany while researchers were working on the latest edition of the Köchel catalog, which compiles the composer's works.
The work was likely composed between 1760 and 1769, when Mozart was still a teenager, possibly between 10 and 13 years old.
The piece consists of seven miniature movements for a string trio (two violins and a bass).
Although it was not written directly by Mozart, the score is a copy made around 1780. The signature "Wolfgang Mozart" used in the manuscript is one that the composer used until 1769, reinforcing the idea that the work is from his youth.
After its discovery, the music was performed for the first time in Salzburg on September 19, 2024, and had its premiere in Germany at the Leipzig Opera on September 21.
The discovery not only rekindles interest in Mozart's works but also highlights the significance of his youth as a composer. Ulrich Leisinger, head of research at the International Mozarteum Foundation, commented that this new work is a significant reminder of Mozart's early talent and suggests that other lost compositions may still await discovery.
Classical music continues to surprise and enchant new audiences, even centuries after the death of its creators.
