Disabled and blind Liverpool fans were among those tear-gassed by French police at the Champions League final as calls were made for Paris to be stripped of the right to host major football events.
French government officials have attempted to blame Liverpool supporters for the disruption in Paris on Saturday, which saw kick-off delayed by 37 minutes and thousands of people – mainly English fans – made to wait for hours to gain access to the stadium amid widespread organisational chaos.
Riot police used tear gas on supporters as they waited to gain access to the ground and Ted Morris, the chairman of the Liverpool Disabled Supporters’ Association, who was in Paris for the final, said that numerous fans have been traumatised by the “horrendous” experience.
Morris said that Liverpool fans had arrived hours before the final, only to be met with a “chaotic” initial ticket check by young stewards that became overrun by random locals. There was then further chaos at the turnstiles and numerous terrifying experiences on the return journey to the station.
