Sorry for the wobbly footage as this was captured with the camera being hand held. I have to thank my husband for capturing this beautiful bird. The Rainbow Bee-eater has not visited my backyard before and I think she/he is just passing through so this may be the only footage we got of it.
Rainbow Bee-eaters feed on flying insects, but they also have a real taste for bees. They are always watching for flying insects, and can spot a meal up to 45 metres away. Rainbow bee-eaters are immune to the stings of bees and capturing a bee they will rub the insect's stinger against their perch to remove it, closing their eyes to avoid being squirted with poison from the ruptured poison sac. Bee-eaters can eat several hundred bees a day.
