David and Barbara held their fourth annual apple cider making event in their backyard with us friends. We had a fantastic time watching and assisting with the process of grinding and pressing apples picked from our trees using David’s homemade grinder and press. David, a highly skilled woodcarver, designed and constructed both the apple grinder and press out of various types of wood. It was a fun and delicious experience! What a great way to make use of too many apples to eat instead of letting them fall to the ground and rot. Thank you, Dave and Barbara, for sharing this wonderful homegrown organic food solution!
Background: Over the past four years, Dave, a neighbor, good friend, woodcarver, and inventor has worked on improving his innovative designs of a home-made apple grinder and press. This year, instead of using an electric drill to rotate the grinder wheel, he rebuilt a 1934 single-cylinder International Harvester LA Engine, mounted it on a wheeled cart, installed a pully on the engine drive shaft and used a long belt to spin the grinder wheel. How cool is that!
