The Halaqat Impro Sessions went out with a bang. For the third and final event of this exciting series, we put together an orchestra with artists that took part in the two previous sessions as well as newly selected ones. This group of Arab and European musicians, each with their specific musical background and expertise, convened, exchanged and rehearsed at Werkplaats Walter for five days before mounting the stage of Bozar.
For the second session, we welcomed internationally renowned percussionist Khaled Yassine as a mentor. For the third and last session, we were very honored to be able to entrust top-class musician Amir ElSaffar with the task of guiding these great talents during their residency. The American composer, trumpeter, santur player, and singer of Iraqi origin is touted as an artist "perfectly positioned to bridge the gap between jazz and Arabic music" (The Wire) and as "one of the most promising figures in jazz today" (Chicago Tribune).
Come and join us for a behind-the-scenes look at the creation process leading up to their performance at Bozar.
