My friend Ensari and I unbox a ClearPath SD (Step / Direction) servo and get it running and tuned. Lovely auto tuner software (funny warnings) and generally a joy. $419 buckeroos w/o power supply or cables and about a third of a horsepower actual output.

If you want the same or more power, for under $50 worth of electronics, and whatever DC motor you find (I got massive 1hp DC gear motors for $15 at a salvage yard) AND you can solder an electronics kit, check out this page:

it is capable of 720 watts or just under 1 horsepower (input) which will give anything from 1/2 to 3/4 hp at the output depending on the efficiency of your motor.
