California lawmakers will open the new legislature Monday with a brief organizing session that will highlight a divide between Democrats and Republicans that the state's legislative historian has called "unprecedented" in modern times. Following last month's elections, Democrats will now hold 60 of the 80 seats in the Assembly and 29 of 40 seats in the Senate. Only four of the 17 incoming lawmakers are Republicans. Highlighting the growing gap, eight of those new Democratic lawmakers will take their oaths of office to represent California legislative districts previously held by Republicans.
