Sorry about the shaking camera it was dangling from a washing line and its windy here. anyway its done now cant redo it - skip this vid if the shaking is annoying but this was a fairly important part.
Here the neck blank is roughly shaped on the back. I do this to reduce weight of the finished guitar, you could of course leave the neck square but it would be heavy and unbalanced. Headstock cut to rough shape with a kitchen knife - note I cut a slight angle on the headstock before gluing to the neck so we get a nice(proffesional) looking headstock angle and the strings will have more pressure on the nut giving a better tone.
All glue joints are covered with newspaper - this helps to stop the wind blowing them out of alignment as it's drying but mainly this will stop sand getting in the cracks - sand in the mold is a great way to cause turbulance in the molten aluminium which will "freeze" the molten metal and your casting will fail.
This is also the reason why we will use the lowest density foam possible - high density foam makes a much neater mold but the molten metal tends to "freeze" as it's halfway down the neck - which is a big waste of time.
Note I drew a square halfway up the neck and avoided shaping/sanding that area. This is where I will attach a riser - more on this later
