„UNTER FALSCHER FLAGGE?“ / "SAINLING UNDER FALSE COLOURS?"
Sparten- und Grenzüberschreitungen in der Gegenwartskunst / Transdisciplinary and Transgressive Practices in Contemporary Art
1. Konferenz des medienwerk.nrw
PACT Zollverein, Essen
Through a series of talks and lectures, the interdisciplinary conference „Sailing Under False Colours?“ looked at transdisciplinarity in art from a historic perspective and examined related questions such as media migration, work-specific temporalities, the relationship between cultural policies and cross-boundary practices, and strategies of transdisciplinary curating.
The conference surveyed the recurring convergence of traditional artistic disciplines such as film, visual arts, performance and, more particularly, media art, in which classical distinctions between artistic categories seem once again to dissolve. The work of artists such as Christoph Schlingensief, Tino Sehgal and Rimini Protokoll, or exhibitions such as 12 Rooms (Museum Folkwang, as part of Ruhrtriennale, Essen, 2012) and Speculations on Anonymous Materials (Museum Fridericianum, Kassel, 2013/14) are recent examples of new alliances and shifting competences and perspectives in contemporary art, which are drawing on nearly half a century of avant-gardistic developments. The conference asked if these exhibitions and events testify to a new appeal of ephemeral practices, while investigating the changes in society and in the conditions of production they react or claim to react to.
medienwerk.nrw and the conference are funded by the Ministry for Family, Children, Youth, Culture and Sports of the Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
