A message from Ms. Stephanie: Since being in quarantine, I have been able to go back to my roots and find all of my dance textbooks. It has been wonderful re-reading passages and reminding myself of some awesome explorations that I am excited to revisit. One exploration that is super relevant to what we are dealing with during this time is "Body Awareness." I found a wonderful exercise in my book, "The Dancer Prepares: Modern Dance for Beginners." Fifth Edition. By Jamed Penrod & Janice Gudde Plastino. I have done this with my modern classes during SDSD Dance at Home, and it is lovely to see each dancer connect to their breathing, to their body, to their surroundings, and to themselves during this confusing time. This exploration is a wonderful way to center yourself, calm your nerves, and bring awareness to your whole self, not just the parts. The authors state that "These kind of quiet, unrushed, self-reflective experiences may reinforce your movement abilities, choreography, & improvisations."
