Bread is a staple in almost every country’s diet. It is part of tradition, and mostly people turned to white bread in the past decades. However as the health and nutrition culture has been rising, a lot of studies confirm, that white bread is not the best thing to eat at all. And there are some healthier options than white bread, so let’s go through some bread types and see what can be the healthiest for us.
First of all, there are a ton of bread types. In this one, we are just gonna take a look at a couple of the most popular ones and which can be the best option, if you decide to eat bread.
White Bread 🍞
White bread…okay there is not much to talk about here, the most refined of them all, basically no nutrient content, no fiber and empty carbs. You can do much better than white bread!
Whole Wheat Bread 🥙
Whole wheat bread is a much better option than white bread. Whole wheat bread is high in fiber, but white wheat almost contains none. Most wheat fiber is insoluble, and it might be beneficial for gut health. Although there are some soluble fibers in wheat, that can cause problems to people with IBS.
Whole wheat bread can have several health benefits because of the vitamin and mineral content. These are found in the wheat bran, which is removed, when they are refining the wheat. Whole wheat bread contains essential minerals like selenium, manganese, phosphorus, copper and folate.
There are other bread types, that are usually brown and contain wheat types like rye, spelt or others, that are way more nutritious than white bread. My recommendation is also to opt for bread, that is fresh, unpacked and natural, free of all unnecessary preservatives and additives.
The healthiest bread to eat? Sourdough Bread 🥪
Sourdough bread is not a new thing, our grandmothers and great grandmothers used to it sourdough bread, it is a really old way to bake bread. The popularity of it has been rising again, since it is confirmed, that it can be really good for you.
The main reason is, that sourdough is a fermented product and fermented things are known to be great for gut health, healthy digestion and overall health. A lot of experts suggest eating fermented food every single day, which are rich in probiotics and they feed the good bacteria in your gut. Gut issues and digestive issues are so common nowadays and can be the baseline of several other health problems so fixing your gut is essential!
The other nutrient benefits of sourdough bread depend on the flour that is used with it, so it is best to eat whole-wheat, rye or other type of bread, that is made with flour that is richer in fiber and nutrients.
This is why sourdough bread is the best option and also because of the sourdough, the bread contains way less gluten than regular bread, that is made with baker’s yeast. Of course if you are gluten intolerant, avoid this one as well and only opt for gluten-free bread or just skip bread at all. Buti f you tolerate gluten, I really recommend you to enjoy some sourdough bread every once in a while!
All in all, you don’t need to skip leave bread out of your diet. You just need to opt for healthy versions and also keep an eye on your calorie intake with it! As for myself, I try not to eat a ton of bread and gluten at all. But when I eat, I opt for the best options, just like a whole wheat sourdough bread and enjoy it without any guilt. Fresh sourdough with some avocado and tomatoes…yumm!
