The National People's Army was the armed forces of the German Democratic Republic from 1956 to 1990. The NVA was organized into four branches: the Landstreitkräfte, the Volksmarine, the Luftstreitkräfte, and the Grenztruppen. On October 3, 1990, the German Democratic Republic and the Federal Republic of Germany were reunited. However, the army of the GDR was not included in the Bundeswehr, but was actually disbanded. Armament and equipment was supposed to be sold to other countries or disposed of.
