Praia Formosa
Praia da Formosa is one of the most frequented and appreciated beaches of the wonderful Santa Maria Island, Azores Archipelago.
Situated on the south coast of the island, it presents calm and crystalline waters and fine, clear sand.
In contrast to the other small islands of dark sand and small size, Paria Formosa can be considered one of the top 3 beaches in all of the Azores. Praia da Formosa is also known as a great surfing spot, given its good conditions for practicing this type of water sports.
In the same bay, we can find Fort of St. John the Baptist, or “Castle of the Beach”, formerly used to defend the coast from violent pirate attacks, but nowadays it lays in ruins.
